The Academy of Health Professions is a magnet program at Tampa Bay Technical High School. Admission is selective. Approximately 25% of those who apply are accepted. Students are offered an academically rigorous program and training in a variety of health and engineering disciplines. In addition to meeting state graduation requirements, academy students follow a four-year college preparatory curriculum bolstered by numerous advanced placement, honors and dual enrollment courses. To excel, students must be intellectually talented, highly motivated, and thoroughly disciplined.

The Academy of Health Professions is the most comprehensive medical magnet in the country. The Academy facilitates the development of marketable skills to prepare our graduates to enter the medical career job market at the aide or assistant level as well as prepare for post secondary education. Students interested in the fields of dental lab, optometry patient care assisting, veterinary, medical lab, nursing, physical and occupational therapy, sports medicine, radiology or medicine may avail themselves of specific coursework and laboratory experiences as well as clinical rotations designed to prepare them to make educated career and college choices. The students, therefore, may begin to work in a medically related career right out of high school or work in a medical area while pursuing higher education.

The Academy of Health Professions embraces the individuality of each student by designing the curriculum around the student's needs and interested. With a pupil/teacher ratio of 25:1 or less, students can receive the individual attention needed to progress at an accelerated rate of learning.

COURSE OF STUDY

The School District of Hillsborough County, in cooperation with area colleges and healthcare providers, has created a magnet program specifically for students interested in medicine. From neuro-surgery to nursing, vision care to veterinary technology, the Academy of Health Professions provides a specialized program to prepare students for a wide range of healthcare careers.

The Academy's curriculum design allows each student to tailor his or her program according to specific career goals and interests. Membership in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) is required and is co-curricular. This organization develops student leadership through medical competitions at the local, state, and national levels.

THREE COURSES OF STUDY ARE OFFERED:

Course of Study I is an academically intensive program for students pursuing careers requiring a Baccalaureate or postgraduate college degree. This course of study meets the Florida Academic Scholar Program of Studies Requirements.

Course of Study II provides several options including pursuit of a Baccalaureate degree, Associates of Arts (two-year) degree, or postsecondary certificate and meets all requirements of the college preparation course of study.

Course of Study III will enable students to enter a community college or attend a postsecondary technical center. This course meets all requirements of the Technology Preparatory Course of Study.

Within each course of study, each student will select an area of emphasis. Among the many career preparation paths are those for dentistry, dental lab, medical laboratory, medical researcher, nurse, occupational therapist, optician, physician, physical therapist, veterinarian, vision care assistant, or x-ray technician.

REASONS FOR CHOOSING AN ACADEMY EDUCATION

Today, population growth, particularly within the state of Florida, has created a special need for healthcare and engineering professionals. Of the ten fastest growing careers identified by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, seven are healthcare or engineering occupations.

Each Academy graduate will be prepared to enter the job market at the aide or assistant level in his or her chosen major. Therefore, students may work while pursuing a higher education.

Students will work in state-of-the-art laboratories. Each student lab station accesses a computer network of advanced scientific software. Multimedia, interactive computer programs allow students to simulate actual medical conditions. All science lab facilities will meet state honors and advanced placement standards.

Hands-on learning is emphasized. Students practice skills through learning experiences in the areas major hospitals, clinics, and university laboratories. In addition, students are assigned mentors within their chosen fields creating opportunities for extensive job shadowing.

Core academic subject matter and technical course work will be linked so that students' learning and interests are reinforced. Summer seminars will also be offered.

All students will become computer literate by the end of their technical program.

Teachers are hired after county-wide recruitment and a rigorous selection process.

The Academy will maintain a computerized College and Career Exploration Center tied to a national network of information, whereby students may search for colleges, scholarships, and financial aid.

Transportation will be provided.
