VISION
CARE ASSISTING The Vision Care Program introduces the student to the optical field. Upon completion of this six-hour course, students are able to work in the optical industry in a variety of settings. This course introduces the student to ocular anatomy and physiology, basic optical principles, geometric optics, lensometry, keratometry, and optical laboratory techniques. The material covered in this program consists of both theory and practical hands-on work. Students will use state of the art optical equipment on a daily basis. Techniques such as surfacing, finishing, and the dispensing of eye wear are mastered, resulting in a complete pair of prescription eyeglasses that will allow someone to see clearly through a piece of material such as glass or plastic. Additionally, the student is trained on patient workup procedures such as taking patient history, visual acuitys, and color vision testing. This education will enable the students to acquire a job in the optical industry where they may select an apprenticeship to become an optician or ophthalmic assistant or continue their education by earning an Associates of Science degree in Opticianry. They may also select to earn a Bachelor's degree and then continue on to optometry school or medical school to specialize in ophthalmology. |
